Chinoiserie Ware Plate

The late 19th century saw a growing demand for affordable, durable, and mass-produced goods. Chinoiserie ware, such as this plate, emerged as a popular choice, allowing individuals from various economic backgrounds to experience the beauty of Asian-inspired ceramics through budget-friendly imitations.

This plate was mass-produced, shaped in a press rather than through the traditional hand-forming method. Its intricate design was achieved through transfer printing, applied both under and over the glaze. The registration mark on the base of this plate, dated January 28th, 1880, with parcel number I2, and the 'Oriental Ivory' stamp, reveals its origin as ironstone earthenware—a dense ceramic containing China stone. China stone, rich in feldspar, was exclusively found in Cornwall, making it a valuable resource.
