Gosu Blue Satsuma Ware

The Satsuma ware style developed in the late 16th to early 17th century by Korean potters who were living in the Satsuma Province of Japan. Satsuma ware was a popular export product from Japan for centuries. This ceramic is ‘Gosu’ blue ware which was produced during the Meiji period in Kyoto, rather than the Satsuma Province in Kyushu. The shape of the vessel indicates that it was likely an incense burner (koro).

This vessel could be attributed to Kinkozan, it is four-lobed, double-handled and has four baluster legs. It is richly decorated with gilding and has six polychrome enamel cartouches depicting a mix of Geisha and Samurai warriors. It is approximately 12cm in height and has a width of 15cm.
